K-POP CARBON HUNTERS
K-pop fans want to enjoy concerts for a long time to come. For concert culture to last, we need to tackle one major challenge: creating low-carbon concerts to protect K-pop and the planet from climate change. To make this happen, we need to raise our voices together. “K-Pop Carbon Hunters” ft. Concert Carbon hunters? Don't you mean demon hunters? Nope, you read it right! A letter from K-pop fans

For K-pop fans, concerts aren’t just a one-time experience, but a lifelong memory. ‘I haven't moved on from the concert ...’ ‘My heart is still at the festival...’ Even when things go back to normal after a concert, fans will relive the moment, which shows how meaningful live music is to them. But what if concerts are cancelled because of climate change? We experienced something similar during the COVID-19 pandemic. We'd like to avoid going through that experience again. We want a future where fans can enjoy music and concerts without any worries, and where the lives and livelihoods of artists and fans are not threatened by the climate crisis. To achieve this, we need low-carbon concerts.

The show must go on despite the climate crisis.

Q1. Why are the K-pop Carbon Hunters talking about concerts?

Concerts are the highlight of the music industry, but they also emit the most carbon.* In other words, how concerts are organized can either become a spell that saves us from the climate crisis or a curse that accelerates it. *As of 2007, live performances accounted for approximately 73% of the carbon emissions generated by the music industry. (Julie's Bicycle, UK non-profit organization, 2007 study)

Q2. Are low-carbon concerts actually possible?

Q3. Are there any examples in Korea?

Q4. So how can we organise a low-carbon K-pop concert?

1. Measure carbon emissions The first step in reducing an event’s environmental footprint is measuring and disclosing carbon emissions throughout the concert process and announcing reduction plans. 2. Quit fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy!  The next step is powering concerts with renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. Successful examples include Billie Eilish, Coldplay, and Massive Attack, as well as at festivals like Glastonbury and Coachella. Additionally, emitting carbon and offsetting it through other methods should be avoided. 3. A full stop to single-use products and plastic!! At venues, single-use water bottles, cups, and cutlery used by concert goers and staff are thrown away in large quantities. By banning single-use plastic and hosting refill stations, waste can be significantly reduced. 4. Support and encourage eco-friendly travel choices: minimize air travel and promote the use of public transportation. Fan travel accounts for a large proportion of a concert's total carbon emissions. It is important to encourage the use of public transportation and carpooling, and offer rewards or discounts to fans who show proof of using these options. Artists, staff, and logistics should also minimize air travel and actively consider using local personnel and equipment. 5. The organizers and artists actively promote an eco-friendly message If artists raise awareness about the climate crisis among fans, and organizers are genuinely committed to putting on eco-friendly shows, then fans, artists, and concert planners can all unite to create a sustainable concert.
